Critiquing Photography Challenge
Project by Ariana Woodson
Descriptive: This is a map of the Washington D.C. Metro rail lines. It serves no other purpose other than to offer show riders where each line goes, making it a descriptive kind of photograph.
Explanatory: My photograph is explanatory because it depicts the phases of a back handspring, from the proper down position to the follow-through.
Interpretive: The subject in my photograph seems to be looking at something off camera in a thoughtful manner. I left what she is looking at, possibly thinking about, and the tone of the sky up to the viewer's interpretation, which is why it's an interpretive photograph.
Aesthetically Evaluative: My photograph is aesthetically evaluative because it uses different white and grey tones during winter to shoe the beauty of the frozen lake.
Ethically Evaluative: This photograph is ethically evaluative because it is a depiction of human trafficking. The woman in the photo has a large rope wrapped numerous times around her neck as a sign of captivity, and a bar code on her forehead to mean that she is nothing more than a commodity to be bought and sold.
Theoretical: This photograph by Julian Beever is a juxtaposition of what happens when 3D sidewalk chalk is photographed at the wrong angle. It is theoretical because it shows that without looking at 3D sidewalk art at the right angle, it ceases to fulfill it's main artistic objective.

Multimedia Presentation
Synopsis of Multimodal Presentation
For my presentation, I chose to interpret the work of Sally Mann. Her works are almost all n either a book or in a gallery setting. My video explores how Mann utilizes light and dark elements in her work and depicts their representation and struggle between one another in various ways. What is impressive is that she is able to do this with either nature or humans as her subjects. Many of her photos can be viewed in her books, film, and all are available on her website.
My New Perception of Photography
I must admit that I normally like to take pictures of beauty and purity because I believe it’s a mirror of my positive personality. I always felt that if I tried to capture darker elements, it wouldn’t turn out well. However, after seeing Mann’s works and how she is able to connect light and dark elements into her work, I believe I have gained some confidence within myself to explore this area of photography. Now that I have a better understanding of the topic, I feel as if I could see and photograph this in nature.
